That's because the heritage-preserved architecture dictated where larger rooms and suites could fall. The individual style of some of these spaces no doubt has regular guests requesting their favourite rooms.For instance, a sixth-floor garret-style space with its own private courtyard and large spa bathroom is pure rock'n'roll.A more feminine and lighter suite in the tower at the front of the building is a picture of pure romance, looking out on to the street and to the decorated exterior.Another bona fide highlight: executive chef Nick Reade's remarkable restaurant, Alluvial, which aims to use as much local produce as possible. Trained by the Roux brothers of Le Gavroche and previously of J.W. Marriott Phuket, the British chef has constructed a menu heavy on Spanish influences. SF becomes first US city to top $10 minimum wage

If he was on deck I'd give him one of those knowing waves that yachties do.The skipper points the bow towards Whitsunday Island and a ''secret'' anchorage that he says provides one of the best vantage points for island sunset watching.We motor along, then the skipper cuts the engines and hoists the jib and we're pushed along at five knots by a breeze.There's only one other yacht anchored within sight of us in Mays Bay when the sun goes down and the only sounds are the water lapping on the hulls of the catamaran and turtles breaking the surface and gulping for breath.Some of the most famous celebrity-filled islands of the Whitsundays are not far from here, including exclusive Hayman Island, where they might be lining up in their Bermuda shorts about now at the cocktail bar. But out here it feels remote and removed.I'm lying on the catamaran's forward-deck trampoline and I close my eyes and feel becalmed in every sense of the word. After dinner, and by torchlight, the skipper throws a line in for squid and we see some rise to the bait. If you want to step up even further in luxury there are private fully crewed yachts from Ocean Dynamics and DescaradA.These luxury yachts may be roomier than the standard bareboat charter craft but my 11-metre nine-berth Sunsail 384 is cosy, rather than cramped. There are four cabins with double beds and the stylish wood-panelled galley-lounge area has soft sofas wrapping around a central table.No matter which yachting option you choose, chances are you'll end up at world-renowned Whitehaven Beach, where the silica sand is as bright as snow and the swirling waters at the Hill Inlet end of the beach form sand patterns in the shallows, in which stingrays glide and small blue soldier crabs play.Whitehaven is best in the early morning before the tourist boats, sea planes and helicopters make a daily beeline for the seven-kilometre-long beach for swimming, snorkelling and picnics. It's a lumpy ride as we set off but I'm feeling like the sea dog in me is emerging - until a rogue wave washes over the stern where I'm hanging on as tight as those butterflies.The soaking gives me a Jessica Watson moment but in a flash I'm below deck, changing into crisp and dry Bermudas.

WHAT do you call a duck that wags its "tail" and pants like a canine? The answer, at Le Petit Palais, is Teddy. The pet with a duck-dog identity crisis is a perfect fit for this delightful property, with its eclectic mix of French provincial-meets-Australian scrub, with a side of Eastern European style.Le Petit Palais is set on 4.8 hectares of bushland in the historic village of Thirlmere, about 75 kilometres south-west of central Sydney. Its proximity makes it an ideal spot for a getaway with girlfriends to celebrate my upcoming overseas wedding.We're met with a warm welcome from our hosts, Sue and Kevin Thomas, who have prepared a delicious selection of local cheeses, aperitifs and champagne. I make the mistake of mentioning I once studied French and Sue, an unabashed Francophile, starts to converse with me, only to be met by an embarrassed silence as I realise how little of the language I remember.Le Petit Palais has two guest options; we are staying in Mediterranee, a two-bedroom self-contained villa that sits under a magnificent oak tree about 50 metres from the Thomases' house. The five interconnected lakes are among the last undisturbed freshwater lagoons in the Sydney region and although it's too cold for swimming, the surrounding eucalypt forests make for pleasant bushwalking. We spot kangaroos, some with joeys. The Estonian community, which began migrating to Australia in 1853, settled in Thirlmere, building poultry farms and businesses. The Thomases have faithfully restored the sauna built and used by the community; guests are invited to detox in its 60-degree heat.That night, Sue puts on her chef's hat and prepares a three-course dinner, with the ingredients again sourced from local farms.Thoroughly relaxed, we almost float to bed, only to be disturbed by a huge huntsman spider.

WE USED to be as thick as thieves, embarking on camping adventures or heading off to films with the nonchalance of single gals who have loads of free time and the luxury of spontaneity.Now, with six kids between us and "the girls" fleeing Sydney to raise their families in the Blue Mountains and Newcastle, catching up is a once-a-year event.It requires meticulous planning and logistics - and a funky Sydney hotel as our base camp for the night, where we can chew over our lives and hear the city roaring outside. Countless emails, three date changes and a few babysitting favours later and we're sitting in the bar of the new Mercure Potts Point ordering three glasses of brut.Mission accomplished. Happily, our rooms are on the 12th floor and the traffic is a muted current of sound far beneath, with the occasional piercing siren.The fresh-air freaks are delighted to find small windows that push open. And did I mention the views? They stretch from St Mary's Cathedral to the Opera House. The room is smartly furnished, referencing the neo-baroque trend with brocade cushions and a decorative triptych panel behind the bed. The black and brown colour scheme is a bit dark for my taste but the effect is stylish and it won't offend anyone's sensibilities. The pillows are too high and bouncy but that's a constant hotel gripe for me and I'll admit I'm addicted to my feather-down pillow at home. I've got a spa bath in my room, which I don't use, but the shower looking out to views of the city is a very rare treat indeed.Down at the hotel's bar, we clink our glasses and start the massive task of catching up on a year's worth of living. On the agenda: work, men, children, gossip, clothes and other important sundry items. The bar is in a cosy nook, softly lit and staffed by a friendly Scandinavian.Champagne downed, we move on to the restaurant to try the hotel's "wine flight" tasting plate, matched with NSW wines. All blond wood and mirrors and with a big plasma television, the restaurant has a cafeteria-like cold efficiency. It doesn't help the ambience that we're the only customers, though in this case we are so absorbed in conversation it doesn't matter. The canape plate, while a bit slow coming, is delicious and we gobble it up.But I can't help thinking that any hotel trying to provide a restaurant and bar in these parts is brave, like a lone juggler trying to compete with a three-ring circus. Kings Cross on Saturday night never disappoints and we are content to stroll around the Cross, Darlinghurst and Potts Point, checking out the new bars and the street life. Girls hobble on platform stilettos wearing tight and tiny dresses.There's a queue outside the Soho Bar. A couple argue outside a club - "I didn't do it, I swear," she pleads. Cops patrol the streets. And we enjoy the whole merry bazaar, chomping on slices of pepperoni pizza while standing on a street corner. The next morning, we are conversationally sated and our breakfast talk is more a series of relaxed riffs on life as we tuck into eggs Benedict at a nearby cafe. Same time next year, girls?

Robert Carling, a former senior official at the NSW Treasury and now a fellow with the Centre for Independent Studies, offers a warning about the scale of American instability: ''The legacy of four consecutive years of inflated deficits will be a level of debt more than 50 per cent higher, as a proportion of GDP, than before the [financial] crisis, and nominal debt of almost $UStrillion ($10.9 trillion) … debt burden higher than at any time since the early post-World War II years. The difference then was that debt was in steep decline; in the current episode, it is soaring to a new plateau from which there is no prospect of a steep decline.'' Worse, two-thirds of this increased debt is coming from increased spending by the Obama administration, and Congress seems overmatched by the problem. The longer it postpones the painful spending adjustments needed, the bigger the problem becomes because the cost of debt servicing is already beginning to snowball. ''The current fiscal policies contain the seeds of the next global financial crisis Rosetta Stone Spain Spanish with its epicentre in Washington rather than New York,'' says Carling. ''The problem of excessive indebtedness is in the process of being transferred to the public sector. It is not clear how simply passing the problem between sectors can be a solution to anything.'' In the euro zone, another crisis is unfolding. The public debt of Greece is equal to 0 per cent of its GDP. This is much higher than the level of debt when Russia defaulted in 1998. Greece is only the start of the problem. Britain is running a budget deficit of 13 per cent of GDP, even bigger than Greece, and Britain's largest budget deficit outside wartime, all caused by excessive spending, lending and speculation. An assault on the pound appears inevitable. It is foreshadowed by the bond market, where the yields on British 10-year gilts are 4.14 per cent, even higher than Italian bonds. Italy is one of the high-debt, high-unemployment economies once dismissed as ''Club Med'' but, now, as their problem infects the entire euro zone, are referred to brutally as the ''PIGS'' (Portugal, Italy, Greece, Spain). The market anticipates social discord in Greece. The world economy is counting on China, with its billion consumers and hunger for economic growth, to maintain both demand and liquidity to keep the global economy growing. Australia is rapidly becoming an economic colony of Beijing. But China has its own problems. It is creating an unsustainable asset bubble. It is also going to hit the second great wall of China - water shortages. China will stumble at some point. Meanwhile, the advanced Western economies, including Australia, are engaged in a massive social experiment which must fail. We have sought to replace the primary economic unit, the extended family, with state spending. This will impose an unsustainable cost on future generations. While the obvious and prudent response of government in a financial crisis is to provide social and economic shock absorbers by increased spending and borrowing, it is also important not to overreact. If you believe the global financial crisis is still unfolding, the key is not to overshoot, but to conserve resources and policy options. The Rudd government, as it has proved in every area of major policy, overspent. It threw money around with undisciplined Rosetta Stone English panic when faced with the global economic crisis. We said the same thing at the peak of the storm. In May, when the next federal budget is presented, a debt-reduction and stimulus-reduction program would be the prudent course and help bolster the government's credibility in an election year.

Japan's sovereign debt outlook cut to 'negative' by S&P

Kan has so far submitted what he says may be the first of multiple supplemental budgets, worth 4 trillion yen. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano declined to comment on the move, speaking to reporters in Tokyo. He said that policy makers will work to ensure confidence in government bonds. SP also said it will be difficult for Japan to achieve economic growth rates much higher than 1 per cent in the medium term because of deflation and the aging population. Economists estimate that Japan's GDP will shrink the most since the global credit crisis in the second quarter, before restoring expansion in the second half of the year.
