How to Write Education Goals
Recognition and determination of goals precede the success of any endeavor, education included. Rosetta Stone outlet When educators have discovered their aim or expected outcome, a certain sensitivity to the activities that assist in meeting those goals occurs. So if one goal is to make students more aware of their talents, you'll be sensitive to lesson plans, ideas or articles that promote that quality. Otherwise, the topic would pass you by. Maryland Faculty Online says, "Written objectives are a vital part of instructional design because they provide the roadmap for designing and delivering curriculum." Therefore, any educator who desires a successful Rosetta Stone Spanish Spain year will begin with education goals. Instructions Things You'll NeedJob descriptionSchool and/or department mission statementRosterStudent files1Read and review the job description. Understanding the expectations of the position will help fulfill duties and cover all the bases expected for the benefit of the students.2Get a copy of the school's mission statement, and if available, the department mission statement. The mission statement explains what the school purposes to do. Most times, the school will have a vision statement as well, explaining what they hope to accomplish through their mission. Reflect on both statements so it is incorporated in the education goals.3Know the number of students on the roster. This will help with writing education goals because the number of students plays a definite role in the type of lesson plans and educational approaches used to reach those goals. For instance, the more students on the roster, the more difficult it is for one-on-one instruction---and Rosetta Stone Spanish V3 activities and goals might be structured around combating that dilemma.4Find out who the students are. Many times, you'll get student files before the school year, so browse through them for need areas. It's much more difficult to help someone and produce a lasting effect when you don't know anything about them. [ Rosetta Stone Software ] Perhaps you can do a basic questionnaire asking students about their goals, history or beliefs over the summer, or at the top of the school year. Using the information gives insight into discovering what need areas the goals can resolve.

How to Prevent Employees From Installing Software
Microsoft Windows XP Professional is designed Rosetta Stone outlet for use on personal computers in business settings. XP Professional incorporates features that minimize the frequency with which users inadvertently create operating system problems on business computers.A limited account is a type of user account that restricts the actions a user can take when logged into an XP-based computer. For example, users with limited accounts can access installed software applications but generally cannot install new hardware or software. In addition to establishing clear computer-use guidelines for your business, you can Rosetta Stone Arabic prevent employees from installing software on your business's Windows XP Professional computers by assigning employees to the limited account type. 1Write and distribute your business's policy on acceptable computer use and specify that installing software on a business computer is against policy. Consider using published policies from other institutions as a preliminary model to help create your own.2Implement changes in support of your computer use policy by changing employee user accounts to Limited users. The Language of Venture Capital
The first time I attended a conference to learn about venture, I was greeted at the door by a Rosetta Stone outlet man who said, simply, "VC or Entrepreneur?" I knew I wasn't a "VC" or Venture Capitalist, but had never realized that I was an Entrepreneur -- or that the word "Entrepreneur" could actually be a job title. So, shortly thereafter, I joined the ASTIA program for female entrepreneurs (now firm in my conviction that I was an Entrepreneur). This is an incubator for female CEO's with start-ups. I distinctly remember sitting in one of the first seminars struggling to follow the language one of the instructor/CEO's was using to demonstrate how to assemble my company financials. It was then that I realized that almost every other woman in the room was struggling to keep up as well. Yes, there were a few MBA's who had the lingo down, but not the rest of us. And what I also realized was, it wasn't because we weren't able to articulate what was being asked of us -- in fact, most of us could rattle off the answers if asked in layman's terms. But not so in venture speak.Since that time, I've started to familiarize myself with the terminology necessary to operate in this world of start-ups, fundraising and building a business. It was not something that, as a woman, I had ever been exposed to, though I had started businesses before. And Rosetta Stone German I realized that women in particular are very disadvantaged by not knowing this language. So, for my first blog, I am sharing with my fellow female entrepreneurs what and how I learned the "language of venture." Here are a few suggestions that worked for me:1.Attend pitch sessions. Most angel groups have showcases. (you can Google angel showcase in your area; or if you don't find any, check out www.vator.com, the www.pitch.com or other online pitching opportunities. (Note: a "pitch" is exactly what it sounds like -- you explain your idea in concise, clear language designed to let your potential investor see what you see in the idea with an end goal of getting them to give you money to do it.) I'd also suggest seeking the advice of others in the audience. If you're lucky enough as I was to sit next to someone who will take the time to critique the pitches for you (my chance meeting was with Ted Driscoll, angel, VC and now friend extraordinaire...), then take advantage of the fact that most have probably seen hundreds of these pitch's and can focus you on the most effective way to clearly and concisely present your business and connect with potential investors. 2.Earnings Calls: I got a great bit of advice from a friend at Goldman I met on a plane years ago. He said: Listen to earnings calls. Anyone can call in. So give it a try. Write down all the words you hear that you are not familiar with. Then look them up. Google them. See how they're used. Rosetta Stone Greek Then try to apply them to your business. If you pick up languages easily, great. If not, listen more. You'll pick it up and soon start talking about your relationships in terms of scaling! (Or not... yikes... time to bail.) 3.Power Point: Do a tutorial for using the Power Point program. This is the common form of presentation when you pitch your idea to potential investors or venture folks. I have always liked Bill Reichert's pitch guidelines. Aside from being a smart man (evidenced by the fact that he's married to a very lovely and smart woman who's also a lawyer and also a Michelle), his advice is solid. You can find his slideshow presentation here, which contains the ten things that should be in your presentation. And don't be deterred when they ask you to make it "pretty." I was so worried about insulting my audience that I had all very serious words and statistics on each page. I was told venture loves statistics that support your proposition that the market is huge and that they will make tons of money if they invest -- so they don't have to take your word for it. Wrong on the words. Right on the statistics. Venture folks don't like to work too hard to get your point. If they do, you lose their interest. Think of it like dating: If you take one look at him and yell "check!" -- it's probably not going to be a match made in heaven.4.Connect to Women Run Networks: There are several networks promoting women such as ASTIA, Girls in Tech, Catalyst. [Rosetta Stone Software ] I started with ASTIA, which is an incubator. Sharon Vosmek, ASTIA CEO, throws out some pretty interesting statistics (i.e. only 4.3% of venture investments in 2006 had female CEO's). Translation = opportunity! So find one in your area and connect. Aside from providing access to funding, these places teach you "investor speak." This language includes crafting your pitch, assembling a team, identifying market statistics that prove people need/want what you're offering, assembling credible financials to make profit projections (another blog on this another day... ), and possible exits (how will investors realize their profit). They also provide relationships with other CEO's or with "coaches" who have experience in your field. Bottom line, it's all about being able to effectively communicate in their language the need for what you're selling in the market, that your particular solution is the answer, and explaining just how your opportunity will make your investors rich (... now that's a language we can all understand).Hopefully I've been able to shed a little light on the language barrier preventing many women from obtaining venture investment for their business.

Connecting Meaning and Learning Through Storytelling
People instinctively organize their thoughts as stories. Well-crafted stories engage, Rosetta Stone software inform, and inspire and inevitably resonate with us over time. The practice of storytelling is not a new one. Stories have always carried messages even before writing was the main carrier. The art of storytelling in recent days has made a resurgence in business and marketing. People are realizing the power that narrative has in engaging and informing people about a product or a brand. Within education, these same techniques can be used to create an emotional connection with curricular content. With the flurry of testing our students and teachers are now subjected to, education has become formulaic in its approach. Rubrics are given to students that define their success for them before they even attempt a task on their own. The development and implementation Rosetta Stone Greek of the Common Core Standards is the perfect opportunity in which we can rethink the way education is conceived. Using the standards as a foundation, we can be sure that our students are reaching necessary benchmarks and achieving learning outcomes on a national scale, while allowing for the flexibility and creativity our students and teachers need to thrive. Rather than being the end all in education, the standards instead should be conceived the foundation of a central story aimed at producing academic gains. Time and time again I hear how uninspiring education is today, however through the power of story, it is possible that meaning and learning can powerfully coexist. On the most basic level, children love stories and ache to consume them across media platforms. Rosetta Stone Hindi V3 Spanning narrative across these platforms and weaving together the Common Core Standards will create an education ecosystem that will allow for learning to be immersive, innovative, and transformational. Students will be able to make connections to themselves and to the world around them and this naturally will begin a dialogue based on a story that relates to their family and life experiences -- giving each and every one of them a voice -- inevitably leading to a higher level of engagement. It has been proven that successful schools build relationships, share resources, and connect with the needs of the community. Through storytelling concepts, we can build environments and worlds to connect technologies, languages, cultures, generations, and curricula, which will inevitably allow our learners to flourish in their digital future. Rich stories that move teachers, administrators, students, and parents will turn them into one cohesive community of action. This community would inevitably [Rosetta Stone ] be invested deeply in learning. These dynamic experiences will empower young people, allowing for the proliferation of information and knowledge, as well as ensuring that they will learn together and from each other. The shared sense of purpose that storytelling concepts create, along with opportunities to call upon individual strengths and abilities will inevitably promote achievement in our schools.

New CLU dean to focus on diversity and community
"Young people are idealists. They want to put their education to work," said Rosetta Stone Joan Griffin, new dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at California Lutheran University. It was Lutheran tradition — both religious and academic — that brought Joan Griffin from a small college in Minneapolis to Thousand Oaks, where she now is serving as a dean at California Lutheran University.Griffin, who earned her doctorate at Harvard, was brought up in the Lutheran church, which calls for a life of service to others. In Griffin's case, that call to service will translate into building diversity and community involvement in her new role as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at CLU."What you do is be in service to other people and the community," she said. "It's a church tradition and also an intellectual tradition."Griffin, who started the job this month, comes to CLU from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, where she served as an associate dean, member of the faculty senate and professor of English. She replaces Michael Brint, who was named an Uyeno-Tseng Professor of International Studies at CLU in 2005. Tim Hengst was serving as interim dean of the Rosetta Stone French College of Arts and Sciences.Griffin brings to her new job a mix of intellect, fairness and integrity, said Provost Chris Kimball, who knew her at Augsburg."She's exceedingly thoughtful, very intellectual and well-read," Kimball said. "She's very reflective, particularly about what matters in an undergraduate education at this time."Along those lines, Griffin hopes to make CLU a more "civically minded university." That will mean shaping the curriculum so students get more hands-on learning, including internships, research and community service."Theory is great, but it's not where everybody is," Griffin, 60, said. "Young people are idealists. They want to put their education to work."At the same time, Griffin recognizes CLU's mission to develop its science programs, specifically working with local biotechnology companies to train future scientists. That mission remains despite the recent resignation of John Sladek, a research scientist who served as CLU's president for just one year."It's my job to maintain the [Rosetta Stone ] liberal arts, and that includes the sciences," she said. "I may be like the child in The Emperor Who Has No Clothes,' asking the naive questions and getting the truth."

The results have been declining financial incentives to develop and produce vaccines
The result of Clinton’s program was that the government, instead of the doctors, became the direct Rosetta Stone purchasers of most children’s vaccines. Basically, the government was controlling the price to the drug manufacturers, and it was below the cost, so many manufacturers were forced out of business. Thirty years ago, there were 25 companies that produced vaccines. Today, there are only five. That has caused a serious shortage; we now have the evidence of these shortages with H1N1 vaccine. Do you want the government handling your healthcare? This should not be a partisan issue. It should be about you and your family’s right to decide what kind of care you want, not somebody in Washington. We can’t change history.— Kenneth Manzer, CamarilloFight water-rate hikeRe: your Nov. 3 article, “Moorpark-area water rates likely to increase 16%”:I want to thank The Star for the Page 6, Section A, story regarding the water rate hikes that will happen in Moorpark unless we act together. I only wish The Star had chosen to carry the story on Page 1. It is that important.Let me get this right. Because the Ventura County Waterworks District was in such dire straits earlier this year, we were forced to ration our water use by a minimum of 15 percent. Where were all the hydrology experts at the district and the municipalities when the environmental impact studies were being conducted and certified prior to all the development? They were obviously sleeping or they did not care that there was not enough water to supply their customers. Development equates to Rosetta Stone Chinese tax revenue. We did such a great job conserving water this summer that the district’s revenue stream has been affected. Therefore, the district must now retaliate by increasing the rates again to make up the difference. How disingenuous is that? As the old saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished.I would suggest that, along with our rate hikes, the water district be forced to reduce its operating budget by 31 percent — 15 percent for January 2009 and 16 percent for January 2010. Additionally, the district should be required to reduce its profit margin Rosetta Stone French by the same 31 percent. In any event, everyone should write letters of protest to the district at: Ventura County Clerk of the Board, 800 S. Victoria Ave., Ventura, CA 93009. They should also plan on attending the public hearing Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. in the City Council chambers at Simi Valley City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road. [Rosetta Stone] If more than half of the district’s customers object in writing, the district will be forced to cancel the current proposed rate hike. This could be another tea-party moment.

“Cities are told to give cash to state”:I’m not going to talk Rosetta Stone outlet about the virtues of state school funds versus city redevelopment funds. I’m just skeptical of the why’s in such an exchange.Certainly our children’s education has an emotional element to it. It would have a practical side to it if our school system was not already failing many students. Here are my questions:— Will the city redevelopment funds being transferred to the state education system correct the school systems’ problems, or will it just kick the problem down the road to a new governor?— Will this money go to the classroom, or will it just be spent on union-represented employee salaries?Taxpayers have a right to know. — William “a.inline_topic:hover {http://www.audiorosettastone.com/}Bill” Hicks,Newbury ParkNo state religionRe: Jeff Von Molt’s May 5 letter to the editor, “Know the facts”:I think it’s Mr. Von Molt who should read the Constitution and study the Founding Fathers’ intentions. God is not mentioned anywhere in the Constitution or any of its amendments, nor does it require “that every individual give praise and thanks to God” as Mr. Von Molt suggested. The First Amendment does state, however, that “the Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.”I think that makes it very clear that the government of the United States is not in the business of promoting any deity, god or religion.James Madison wrote in a letter to Jasper Adams, president of the College of Charleston, that “history demonstrates that religion flourishes most freely when it is not supported by the state, and that the state should not impose religion on its citizens.”The United States is, by virtue of the Constitution, a secular nation with a Rosetta Stone Spanish V3 very deep foundation in the belief of a God.— John Mulchay,CamarilloYou can’t eat oilRe: your articles on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill:Once the sea life is gone, when all our creeks and rivers are polluted and the air is thick with pollution, we may finally realize that we can’t breathe, eat or drink oil.Wake up, America!— Monique Sonoquie,GoletaFoster Library policy Re: your May 2 article, “Kids get own space among library books”: E.P. Schools, lawmakers cut sabbaticals to trim costs
Under pressure to cut costs, state universities and lawmakers across Rosetta Stone Store the nation are going after one of the oldest traditions in the academic world: the professor's cherished sabbatical.Professors often use the paid breaks from teaching to write books, develop new courses or collaborate with colleagues around the world. But the practice is increasingly being questioned by critics who say it offers little more than a paid vacation at a time when other public employees are being furloughed or laid off."Why should the taxpayers of Iowa be paying to basically give these folks a year off from teaching?" asked incoming House Speaker Kraig Paulsen, a Republican whose party won control of the chamber in November. "It's as simple as that."Some schools are reducing the number of sabbaticals awarded, angering faculty members who say their research and teaching will suffer. The University of Iowa has already cut its sabbaticals in half over the last two years. Paulsen and other GOP leaders have proposed canceling them completely for a year.At other schools, sabbaticals have been postponed or eliminated. Truman State University in Missouri abolished sabbaticals for the budget year that begins July 1 because of expected shortfalls, Provost Richard Coughlin said.In Louisiana, Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal slashed higher education budgets last month. He said the cuts might prompt universities to reduce sabbaticals and "force professors to actually spend more time in the classrooms teaching and interacting with students."And in Wisconsin, the incoming Republican leader of a legislative committee overseeing higher education wants to know how much sabbaticals cost and whether they are being used for worthwhile projects or as vacations, aide Mike Mikalsen said.Julie Bell, who tracks higher education issues at the National Conference of State Legislatures, said it's not surprising cash-strapped states would review sabbaticals, faculty salaries Rosetta Stone V3 and benefits, and the amount of time professors spend teaching."In this environment, everything is on the table," she said.Defenders of sabbaticals, which are typically awarded every five to seven years, say some of the criticism stems from a misunderstanding of professors' jobs.Professors, they say, are not just teachers but also scholars and public servants. Sabbaticals, they contend, are critical to advancing research, winning grants, publishing books and keeping up with the latest developments in their fields. Then professors can bring that knowledge back to the classroom."There's one word that explains why we're a city of literature, and that's 'sabbatical'," said University of Iowa history professor Jeff Cox, referring to an award Iowa City received in 2008 from UNESCO, the educational and cultural arm of the United Nations.Cox, who has used sabbaticals to write books on the history of religion, said humanities professors have been demoralized by the decision to cut the number of sabbaticals, a move he called political. He said he worried that younger professors would not be able to make a career out of both teaching and research like he has.Interim Provost P. Barry Butler said the school responded to Rosetta Stone Portuguese V3 outside expectations to cut sabbaticals but defends them as critical to the institution's mission. The university plans to ask the Board of Regents on Thursday to approve 58 faculty leaves for the coming year, a slight increase after two years of sharp declines.Defenders of sabbaticals object to Paulsen and others framing them as wasteful entitlements.Professors at Iowa are eligible after 10 semesters of teaching, but they must come up with competitive proposals, which are then vetted by their colleagues. They also have to report on the results of their research.Canceling sabbaticals saves money because schools do not have to hire temporary instructors to take over some classes. But it also risks losing grant money and productivity. In 2009, Iowa professors wrote 26 books while on sabbatical, published 147 research articles, created and updated nearly 100 classes, and submitted 50 grant applications.Karla McGregor, a University of Iowa professor of communication sciences and disorders, Rosetta Stone Languages plans to take a sabbatical in the spring to travel to Australia to conduct research with colleagues, finish papers on autism and start a book about how children learn language."I do think it's essential for the productivity of the faculty and the good of the university to keep the sabbatical program going and strong," she said. "If you don't have a chance to study and stretch yourself in new ways, you are not bringing those new ideas back to the students, back to the university, back to the state of Iowa."At Kent State University in Ohio, the university canceled all sabbaticals last year but has reinstated them with tighter monitoring after "kind of an uproar" among the faculty, said professor Donald Hassler, a member of the faculty senate."It hurts the whole enterprise of the university," he said. "You might save a little cash, but the values of the university would be damaged beyond the cost savings."An official with the American Association of University Professors urged lawmakers to stay out of the debate over sabbaticals."I'm sure they feel it has great symbolic value," said John Curtis, the group's director of research and public policy. But "the whole purpose of sabbatical is to allow faculty members to do research, to engage in understanding new developments in their discipline and then to bring all of that back to their teaching."

Greenock college warns of almost 100 job losses
Almost 100 jobs are under threat at one of Scotland’s largest colleges as a result of funding cuts. Rosetta Stone Staff at James Watt College, in Greenock, have been told up to 75 full-time teaching posts could be lost, as well as 24 support workers. The areas likely to be hit include departments of creative industries, business development, aeronautical and engineering, business and computing and social sciences. The cuts are likely to impact on all the college's campuses in Greenock, Kilwinning and Largs which employ a total of 360 teaching staff. Officials said the job losses were a direct result of funding cuts, rising VAT and reduced commercial income, which has combined to create a shortfall of nearly 6 million. Campus unions argued the proposed job losses would decimateeducation at the college. They also warned against compulsory redundancies. It comes just Rosetta Stone Cheap days after officials from the board of a local regeneration company wrote to the Scottish Government to protest over a 70% cut in funding. Riverside Inverclyde, a public-private sector initiative that aims to create employment in Greenock and Port Glasgow, has had its public funding cut from 9.5m to 2.9m. Sue Pinder, principal of the college, told staff: I wish we were not facing such severe cuts and would rather they could be avoided, but they can't. Ms Pinder said in cash terms the college would receive 3.7m less, with an additional reduction in funding for buildings of 685,000. She added: Our aim is to protect and invest in high-quality learning, eliminate over-staffing by removing those programmes for which there is low demand and those that do not meet our exacting Rosetta Stone French V3 quality indicators. Craig Muncie, of the EIS union, said: The college says the cuts are designed to create headroom for growth and new skills, as well as to protect and invest in a high quality curriculum. Last year, lecturers passed a motion of no confidence in Ms Pinder after claiming they were not being given rights Rosetta Stone Languages to participate in contract talks.

The management and employees of Rosetta Stone Store Mortimer-English Club at the Herscheid Headquarters proudly sit in their office amazed staring at the World Map and thinking how the international expansion courses could be very successful. In eight more countries it will soon be possible to take courses under the concept of the Mortimer-Club: Saudi-Arabia, Arabian Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Jemen and Egypt.Mahmoud Galal, businessman from Egypt, found out about Mortimer whilst surfing in the internet for innovative education programs. He was very impressed with the concept, and also found the lesson plan for the children and adults exiting, being done in a playful way. Some time later Mahmoud and Beverly Galal visited the headquarters in Herscheid. They were both very impressed with the lesson material and saw their expectations highly fulfilled. Galal consulted his ideas with his business partner Abou Alkhair Faisal and came to the conclusion that Mortimer should capture the Arabian country.Alkhair Faisal Rosetta Stone Cheap has taken over the Master-Franchise for the Saudi-Arabia and the Gulf States, Mahmoud Galal will be building-up the company with his Master licence in Egypt. This new concept fills a very large hole in our land. says Mr Galal, There isn t much innovative offer in the segment of language education, but to learn the English language is world wide and greatly in demand. Therefore I am very happy to bring Mortimer into the Arabian world. The training of the Master Partners was held in the beginning of December at the headquarters in Germany. Dodd, Deering get valuable snaps in Tulane loss
Four members of the Rutgers football team lined up under center Saturday during the Rosetta Stone Languages Scarlet Knights' 17-14 Homecoming loss to Tulane and perhaps the most unexpected signal caller saw the majority of snaps.Freshman quarterback Chas Dodd entered the game for an injured Tom Savage more than halfway into the second quarter and still managed to throw 29 passes on the afternoon."I thought he did a good job," said head coach Greg Schiano. "Certainly there's balls I'm sure he'd like to have back, but he threw a lot of nice balls, as well. I thought he showed good composure. He stayed in the pocket, gave routes a chance to develop. As I've said all along, I have confidence in Chas and I think he went out there and he played with confidence."The Lyman, S.C., native saw mop-up duty in the Knights' season-opener against Norfolk State and even threw two passes in the loss to North Carolina. But nothing prepared Dodd for a third-and-11 in the second quarter, when Rutgers trailed the Green Wave, 10-7."It was great," Dodd said. "I had been out there for a few plays earlier in the season, but just to get out there and throw it around a little bit, it was a good opportunity."Dodd completed the throw on third and long to sophomore Mark Harrison for 16 yards and ended the first half with 45 yards on a 3-for-7 throwing clip. The Byrnes High School product regrouped and came out of the locker room in the second half, only to be stymied by another third and long situation on the Knights' opening drive. As was the case with an ailing Savage, Dodd competed for snaps with fellow freshman Jeremy Deering and wideout Mohamed Sanu in the Wild Knight formation."Whatever is working for the team at the time, that's what you have to do," Dodd said. "The Wildcat worked, so we just have to keep doing that."The team's ninth drive of the game for the Rutgers offense almost ended as inconspicuously as it began with yet another three-and-out. A pass interference penalty, Rosetta Stone Cheap however, kept the drive alive and eventually allowed Dodd to find Sanu for Dodd's first career touchdown pass in a Rutgers uniform. The completion to Sanu gave Dodd as many touchdowns through the air as Savage through the team's first four games."It was great. I wish it could have finished with a [win]," Dodd said of the throw to Sanu. "It's good getting that first touchdown out of the way, and hopefully there's plenty more to come."Sanu was the beneficiary of his second touchdown reception of the season, but another Knights wideout may have profited the most from Dodd's midgame entrance.Dodd completed four passes to Deering for 66 yards, but also targeted the Leto High School (Fla.) product on at least four other occasions. Combined with his appearances in the Wild Knight, Deering had noticeably his most productive game for the Knights in his young career."With both quarterbacks, we have connections," Deering said. "They just throw the ball to whoever's open. Rosetta Stone Spain Spanish V3 [Dodd] performed pretty good. He looked comfortable in there and didn't really think about making mistakes. He just played."As is the case in a 17-14 loss to a Conference USA opponent, Dodd looked at times every bit like a true freshman, completing less than half of his 29 pass attempts.Dodd opted to go 30 yards deep to Sanu on a crucial fourth-and-6 in the fourth quarter, resulting in a batted ball that just eluded an outstretched attempt from sophomore Keith Stroud. The Knights turned the ball over on downs, and Tulane forced Schiano to drain all three of the team's timeouts to regain possession for one more drive."[Sanu] wasn't [the first option]," Dodd said. "I was actually looking for the cross there, but I just overthrew him on that one."Like the loss to North Carolina, the Knights had the ball with two minutes remaining in the contest but were unable to come away with points on the team's 13th drive of the afternoon.Dodd threw downfield on another third-and-long but found the waiting arms of a Tulane defender for his first career interception to seal the game for the Green Wave. With Savage's status uncertain for Friday's Big East opener against Connecticut, Dodd may get another chance to build on his Rosetta Stone Languages growing list of firsts.Learning experiences are nothing new to Schiano, whose young team continues to struggle with consistency."I will get to the bottom of it. I'm going to find out," Schiano said. "I thought we learned our lesson in previous experiences, but we didn't. And I didn't, because again, I didn't get it done. So we'll go on and grow from it, but we'll be back."
Painting the blues
As we enter through David Martin’s navy blue door in Eaglesham, the silky chords of Bill Rosetta Stone Evans are wafting into the hall from a CD player in the living room. The album is Interplay, a reassuring omen for our interview. Moving with an easy agility that confounds his 89 years, Martin shows photographer Colin Mearns and myself into the room crammed with paintings stacked sometimes 12 deep against the walls, which are waiting to be uplifted for forthcoming exhibitions. We are not talking retrospectives here but shows of present work and others for paintings soon to be completed. Ninety next year, he says. I can't believe it, but I suppose the secret is to keep doing things. People who retire and just sit and watch television, well, they seem to fade away. Martin belongs to that impressive vintage of painters attached to Glasgow School of Art in the 1940s. It included the exuberant David Donaldson who had been teaching there since 1938, and Joan Eardley, a fellow student already developing the poignantly atmospheric and figurative work which would bring her distinction. I seem to remember that she was a year above me. She was a very reticent girl but powerfully observant and her paintings and drawings of Glasgow street children are marvellous examples of sentiment without sentimentality. But for his part Martin, always a free spirit, found inspiration in the work emerging from Edinburgh at this time. Although I enjoyed and benefited greatly from my time at GSA, I wanted to break away from the academic Rosetta Stone Cheap approach to painting that was at the core of my training there. My interests were with the likes of William Gillies and Robin Philipson whose work, to me, was very exciting. Anne Redpath, whom Martin also knew, belonged in that Edinburgh circle; a much more outgoing character than Eardley who was so very quiet you would hardly know she was there. Eclectic in its influences, Martin's work has focused mainly on landscape and still life. I've always liked the structure in paintings by Cezanne, and, pretty much from the start, I was into Bonnard, then Braque and Picasso. And also I was very keen on Graham Sutherland when he was on the go. Some of Martin's new paintings currently on show at the Roger Billcliffe Gallery in Glasgow, and others destined for the Richmond Hill Gallery in London from August 30 still evoke such masters. Something from all of these sources has rubbed off on me but I hope my art has been moving all the time. I know some artists, whom I won't name, who've been doing Rosetta Stone Portuguese the same thing for 40 years. Landscapes have always been a notable part of Martin's creativity. In the early days I went out laden like a pack mule with canvas, easel, paints and brushes. But that didn't last very long because I much preferred working in the studio from drawings done on site, and going beyond the visual to interpret the subjects that interest me. Martin was born in Glasgow and it was at GSA that he met his late wife, the painter Isobel Smith. But before that his student days were interrupted by four years in the RAF, from 1942, when he Rosetta Stone Languages became an instrument mechanic servicing aircraft mostly in southern India. By that time Martin was regarded at GSA as a mean hand at jazz piano, his band, the David Martin Quintet were a hot ticket for student dances. From my teens I'd been listening to people on the radio like George Shearing. Then when I was in the RAF and stationed at Bath, a band called the Harry Parry Rhythm Sextet came to play at the town hall. I asked if I could have a weekend pass to see them but the answer was no. So, I went awol and you've no idea the thrill of fear and adventure you get when you do that sort of thing.

Over the course of my 20 plus years of experience
That’s the job of parents, and all too often, schools are placed in difficult situations where they Rosetta Stone Spanish V3 are expected to regularly discipline problem kids or deal with serious parenting problems that intrude into educational settings. This is a complicated political and social problem, but the more a school can clearly define what its good at, what it should and effectively can do, and what it shouldnt do, the better for all. 6) What about students that are truly hyperactive, or who have attention-deficit disorder- is this a male female issue or one requiring medication? Certainly, there are real cases of ADHD. But the statistics on how we diagnose and treat ADHD are very troubling. A careful analysis of trends beginning around 1990 paint a very disturbing picture that has lead many in the field of child health to question the veracity of the diagnosis and treatment methods. The rate of diagnosing ADHD in American children nearly quadrupled in a ten-year period beginning in 1987, with boys being diagnosed at least three times more often than girls (some studies show as high as 5 or 6 times more often). Currently, ADHD has become the most common pediatric problem in the US, again mostly among boys. Psycho-stimulant use is common. Pediatric visits lasting 15 minutes have also become common, and diagnoses and prescriptions can be written without much more than a checklist or list of complaints from a childs parent or teacher. This isn’t smart medicine. We know that misdiagnosis is a concern in regular medicine, where we have objective tests such as blood work, x-rays, MRIs, etc. In psychiatric child problems, like ADHD, were likely misdiagnosing at a 25-30% rate. That’s unacceptable. And the bulk of these misdiagnoses are on boys. Over the course of my 20 plus years of experience, I have seen several cases where an ADHD diagnosis is appropriate, but I am reticent to diagnose very young boys who have many natural developmental ups and downs, and who as a group have language and social-emotional struggles early on. Most will outgrow these challenges and wont need medications. Finding the small number of children who will have long-term problems with attention, impulsivity, and motor Rosetta Stone Italian V3 activity is guess work to some degree (no objective criteria is available to measure these and as Ive said before, its based on reports of behavior from others who know the child). Due to such diagnostic inaccuracy, I always encourage parents and professionals to reassess an existing ADHD diagnosis as children develop and change. Further, I am very conservative in diagnosing this problem. I slow the diagnostic process down to collect more data and history. I wont diagnose the condition unless I speak to more than one observer (parent, teacher, camp counselor, coach, etc.), and often I am surprised how many times there are differences. A boy may behave appropriately, focused, non-impulsively, and not hyperactive in one situation but not another. I wont diagnose ADHD in such cases. It should be a problem that shows up, to some degree, across situations and settings. There are many other probable childhood issues and situational factors that can mask themselves as ADHD. The Rosetta Stone Software diagnosis is poorly constructed. Unless a practitioner takes his or her time, evaluates, and collects reasonable observations across contexts and settings, making a diagnostic error (and medicating unnecessarily) is more likely.

Haitian Students Entering Florida Schools Have Help with Brainchild
Florida schools are seeing significant numbers of Haitian students Rosetta Stone Languages file through their doors and some of the schools, like Miami-Killian High School in Miami are better equipped to help those students than others.Haitian Students Entering Florida Schools Have Help with BrainchildMIAMI, Florida March 23, 2010 Florida schools are seeing significant numbers of Haitian students file through their doors and some of the schools, like Miami-Killian High School in Miami are better equipped to help those students than others.Miami-Killian High School has resources on hand to help Haitian students feel some sense of control despite the upheaval in their lives and the language barrier that exists in a new country. The school has dozens of Study Buddy hand-held learning devices on hand which are manufactured by a Florida-based company called Brainchild (brainchild). Study Buddies look like small game devices but they are used by students to reinforce instruction in mathematics, language arts, math and science. And, for the Haitian students, Study Buddies already come with content in their native language, Haitian Creole. It is so wonderful to hand one of our new students a learning device that already has content in their native language, said Sheryl Place, ESOL director at Miami-Killian High School. These students have been through so much that it is just a comfort for them to see some lessons and resources in a familiar language. Technology is a great equalizer. They know about cell phones and they Rosetta Stone Cheap know about gaming devices. The Study Buddy is familiar and it speaks their language.Every student's performance on the state's assessment, the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test), is critical. For new students, landing in a new school and right into a testing environment can be overwhelming especially after the earthquake and trauma of recent events in Haiti. There may be nothing else that these students can control in their lives at the moment but when you hand them a Study Buddy, you can almost see their shoulders relax. At least they can control this one thing and spend a little time learning without having to adapt to English, adds Ms. Place.Study Buddies are complemented by a web-based assessment and instructional resource also by Brainchild called Achiever!. With Achiever!, students can practice for the FCAT without pressure while seeing how well they can handle English in a testing situation. They can refer to the Study Buddy in English, Spanish or Creole to explain concepts or Rosetta Stone Hindi V3 continue working on problems until they understand the concept and are more comfortable with the English version of the questions. We find that our Haitian students have very good academic skills but they need help bridging the language barrier, adds Ms. Place. Study Buddies allow them to go into their own world for a while and practice and build their confidence.About BrainchildBrainchild, Corp. is a Florida-based company that provides standards-based online assessment, instruction and reporting tools that help students reach and exceed learning objectives. The Shamrocks of Literacy in America
Tom Sticht - On St. Patrick's day it is customary to decorate with green shamrocks, like Rosetta Stone Languages three leaf clovers. Some think the tradition of using a three leaf shamrock to celebrate St. Patrick's day symbolizes the Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the Christian faith. But others think it refers to the Celtic Goddess Brigit (pronounced Breet), of whom it is said that wherever she walked small flowers and shamrocks appeared.Brigit was thought of as a tripartite Sun goddess: Brigit the Fire of the Hearth, goddess of family, Brigit the Fire of the Forge, goddess of the crafts and a goddess who was concerned with law and justice, and Brigit the Fire of Inspiration, the goddess of poetry and cultural learning. In this latter image she was even esteemed as the patron deity of language, and was believed to have inspired the alphabet. On this St. Patricks day, occurring in the midst of Womens History month, in place of the three-part Goddess Brigit, a shamrock of three literacy teachers comes to mind. These are three women of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries who have served to bring the Fire of Inspiration, through the mastery of the alphabet to tens of thousands of AmericansThe 19th Century: Suzie (Baker) King Taylor (1848-unknown)When St. Patrick was first brought to Ireland, he came as a slave. Only Rosetta Stone Cheap later did he become a free man. In the mid-19th century, Susie (Baker) King Taylor was born a slave in Savannah, Georgia in 1848. She was raised by her grandmother who sent her and one of her brothers to the home of a free women to learn to read and write, even though it was against the law for slaves to learn to read and write. As she explained in her 1902 book, We went every day with our books wrapped in paper to prevent the police or white persons from seeing them. (Taylor in Lerner, 1972)During the Civil War the Union Army initiated the practice of enlisting freed African-Americans, many of whom were illiterate. In response to these needs, many officers initiated programs of education for the former slaves. One of the people engaged in teaching soldiers to read and write was Susie King Taylor. Describing something of the conditions under which she worked, Taylor said,Outside of the Fort were many skulls lying about; I have often moved them one side out of the path. The comrades and I would have wondered a bit as to which side of the war the men fought on, some said they were the skulls of our boys; some said they were the enemies; but as there was no definite way to know, it was never decided which could lay claim to them. They were a gruesome sight, those fleshless heads and grinning jaws, but by this time I had become used to worse things and did not feel as I would have earlier in my camp life. -(Taylor in Lerner, 1972)According to Taylor, I taught a great many of the comrades in Company E to read and write when they were off duty, nearly all were anxious to learn. My husband taught some also when it was convenient for him. I was very happy to know my efforts were successful in camp also very grateful for the appreciation of my services. I gave my services willingly for four years and three months without receiving a dollar. (Taylor in Lerner,1972)The 20th Century: Septima Poinsette Clark (1898-1987)Septima Poinsette Clark has been called the Queen Mother of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. She was an innovator in teaching adult reading and Rosetta Stone German writing in the civil rights movement of the United States. On January 7, 1957, Clark and her teachers started the first Citizenship School serving adult African-Americans on Johns Island in South Carolina. Clark (1962) recalled that when the teachers asked the students what they wanted to learn, the answer was that, First, they wanted to learn how to write their names. That was a matter of pride as well as practical need. (p. 147).In teaching students to write their names Clark instructed teachers to carve students names into cardboard. Then, according to Clark (1962), What the student does is trace with his pencil over and over his signature until he gets the feel of writing his name. I suppose his fingers memorize it by doing it over and over; he gets into the habit by repeating the tracing time after time. (p.148). She went on to say, And perhaps the single greatest thing it accomplishes is the enabling of a man to raise his head a little higher; knowing how to sign their names, many of those men and women told me after they had learned, made them FEEL different. Suddenly they had become a part of the community; they were on their way toward first-class citizenship. (p. 149).Working with Dr. Martin Luther Steelers Jerseys King at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference Clark took the simple adult literacy educators method for teaching adults to write their names and eventually trained 10,000 teachers to teach literacy so that African-Americans could gain the vote. Altogether, the Citizenship Schools got nearly 700,000 African-American adults registered to vote in the South, providing political muscle to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s!The 21st Century: Ruth J. Colvin (1916-present)Ruth J. Colvin, started her work near the middle of the 20th century in1962 when she started a project which eventually became Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA). She has continued her work into the 21st century and continues into her ninth decade of life. In 2006 she became the first adult literacy educator ever to receive the Medal of Freedom from the President of the United States.Literacy Volunteers of America became a national organization with over 400 affiliates and thousands of tutors offering one-on-one tutoring and small group instruction in literacy for both native born and immigrant adults. At the beginning of the 21st century, LVA merged with Laubach Literacy to form the worlds largest adult literacy education organization, ProLiteracy Worldwide. In her book, A Way With Words, Colvin provides a modern-day version of the Goddess Brigit as the Fire of Inspiration and reminds adult literacy educators everywhere that:We are responsible for own lives. We are stewards of our time, our talents, our resources. Each of us has the same 24 hours each day. We are responsible for how we use those 24 hours. Each of us has talents-different to be sure.We msut use and develop our talents, or, like unused muscles, thell wither away. Each of us has resources. Some have more, some less but each of us is responsible for what is done with these resources. Live life to the fullest physically, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually. Know that you grow as you share your time, talents, and treasures. Here, then, is a shamrock for St. Patricks day: three outstanding ladies of literacy whos work spans three centuries in the history of America. But today the struggle goes on. The National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) of 2003 showed that million of adults are in need of basic literacy.Fortunately, the purple mountains and fruited plains across the Nation are full of shamrocks who continue the work of the Goddess Brigit and continue to inspire adult learners and lead them into the world of literacy and cultural learning.
